Kicking breast cancer starts with awareness

This year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month has come and gone. Once again, we are very proud of and inspired by the many charitable and community activities supported by LM Wind Power employees all around the world, and we hope you will be too!

Wherever we operate, we find people who devote their energy and spare time to helping others.  Education and awareness activities bring benefits beyond the walls of our offices and factories – our colleagues also bring positive messages home to their families and communities, about safety and wellness.

During October, our colleagues around the world echoed a common message: Kicking breast cancer starts with awareness.  The good news is that breast cancer survival rates are improving – almost nine out of ten women survive breast cancer for five years or more (Source: Breast Cancer Care 2017). Knowing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – and checking for them often – can lead to diagnosis sooner and ultimately saves lives.

With almost every LM Wind Power plant and office celebrating October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this may seem like a coordinated, global awareness campaign – but it’s much more than that! Rather, the events and activities were entirely planned and carried out by dedicated individuals and local teams, who went above and beyond their job description.

We’re inspired by the photos and stories they shared from their efforts this year, and hope you will be too!

    Bangalore, India
The ladies at LM Wind Power’s Technology Center India (TCI) launched their “Pink Power” campaign for the month of October by reaching out to more than 170 women across different workplaces. Our colleagues took their awareness campaign outside the office and distributed pink ribbons and breast cancer awareness booklets to female employees throughout their business campus, which houses of more than 30 large companies like Google, E&Y and Twitter.

Tathagata Chakraborty, Team Leader & Business Process Expert, expressed, “Cancer is a word that probably we all fear. It can affect any of us and the only way to fight this fear is to be aware and take appropriate measures at the right time. I would like to thank all our LM Wind Power TCI female colleagues for leading and creating an awareness of breast cancer for the entire professional society around us.”

    Dabaspet, India
Employees in our Dabaspet Plant participated in a discussion with Dr. Aruna from the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology. Specializing in Radiotherapy, she gave employees advice on precautionary measures that can help combat breast cancer.

    Ponferrada, Spain
In addition to sharing prevention advice via email and posters with all employees in Spain, the Ponferrada team prepared a private space in the plant’s nursery room, where women could watch a video with instructions for performing a self-check.

    Grand Forks, USA
The Grand Forks plant celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month with their annual Fall Festival Golf Tournament, donating all proceeds to a local cancer research organization, Relay for Life. The team also raised funds to promote awareness by selling pink bracelets, ribbons and T-shirts with the caption, “Together we can WIND.”

    Suape, Brazil
Our colleagues in Suape celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month on October 18, with many employees wearing pink shirts and ribbons. A doctor introduced a Wellness Program on how to avoid the worst of the disease and educated employees on why early diagnosis can help beat cancer.

    Goleniow, Poland
During October, a doctor spent four days at our Goleniow plant and all employees, regardless of gender, were invited for medical tests. There were many participants and each had 15 minutes with the doctor to talk privately about prevention and issues related to breast cancer.

    Little Rock, USA
Continuing the plant’s annual tradition, the Little Rock team held a T-shirt design contest to support breast cancer awareness. Several employees also participated in the 2017 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Little Rock on October 14.  The theme was "More Than Pink" - encouraging everyone to think beyond the pink color and focus more on the fight against breast cancer.

    Amsterdam, The Netherlands
In the Amsterdam Global Business Office, Management Assistants Mirjam Helsloot and Chantal Nieman baked more than 200 cookies for colleagues, who in return donated funds to support breast cancer awareness. Christopher Springham, Global Communications & Sustainability Vice President, conducted a conversation on the importance of regular self-checks to support early diagnosis.

“The biggest single life saver in the battle with breast cancer is early detection and only last year I found myself running a 10k race around one of our wonderful parks in Amsterdam with the slogan ‘@CHECK@’ on my T-shirt.  This is because this simple advice saved my wife’s life. Check!”

    Gaspe, Canada
During October in Gaspe, hot dogs and cupcakes helped raise money to support breast cancer awareness. “We held four hotdog and cupcake sessions and raised almost $400 from one session! Overall, it was a super nice activity with the sun outside and it was appreciated by everyone,” said Veronique St Laurent, HR Specialist.

    Qinhuangdao, China
At our Qinhuangdao plant, a famous doctor from a local hospital advised 62 female employees on breast cancer and answered their questions. The class featured a broad range of topics including detecting early signs of breast cancer and the advanced screening methods to prevent the disease.

    Baodi, China
The Baodi Plant joined “Pink Action” with the GE Women’s Network - Tianjin Hub. This activity aimed to spread breast cancer awareness, engage female employees to fight against breast cancer and focus on ways to maintain a “Work/life balance.” And, six colleague put on their running shoes and joined a race to support the cause.

    Castellon, Spain
The fourth annual parade against Breast Cancer took place in Castellón, where participants walked to help raise awareness and funds. Many LM Wind Power colleagues joined the GE Women’s Network in the parade, as part of the “Pink tide.” It proved to be a great social event that brought colleagues closer together in a bid to battle breast cancer.
