LM Wind Power sets record for the world's longest blade, again!

We’ve shattered the size record again. Meet LM 88.4 P - the longest, most advanced, wind turbine blade in the world.

On June 21 at Global Offshore Wind in the UK, we announced the world’s longest blade alongside our customer Adwen. This huge component of 88.4 meters has been specifically designed for Adwen’s AD 8-180 wind turbine model, with 8MW nominal capacity and a 180 meter rotor diameter.

The first of these huge blades has just been manufactured at LM Wind Power’s Pilot Plant in Lunderskov, Denmark and will be transported to a facility in Aalborg in the following days, where it will undergo rigorous testing.

LM Wind Power has a history of breaking size records – with the LM 61.5 P as the world’s first blade exceeding 60 meters in 2004, followed by the record-breaking LM 73.5 P in 2011. The LM 88.4 P dwarves these blades by comparison – in fact, the LM 73.5 P could easily fit inside it.

Creating a blade on this scale presents a large step towards lowering the cost of energy from offshore wind, said Roel Schuring, VP Engineering. “With the current blade we have the most competitive offering in the offshore industry because we use the smartest combinations of materials,” he said.

Added Alexis Crama, VP Offshore, “This blade demonstrates our ability to bring innovation and this kind of product to the industry. But what is most important is not that we are the largest blade; the most important is that we make blades that are technology proven, produced every day with absolute reliability and quality focus.”

First stop in the @generalelectric Haliade 150-6MW #WindCycle: blade production. At our factory in Castellón, #Spain, we made the 198 LM blades that will eventually spin at #Merkur offshore wind farm. Each blade is 241 feet (73.5 meters) long and 27 tons, helping the turbine generate 6 MW of energy.
