When icing occurs on the blades of wind turbines erected in cold areas, this causes problems.
A layer of ice can affect the performance of the blades and also increase the risk of lightning strikes. If the receptors are covered by ice, the lightning protection system will not work efficiently.
To solve this, LM Wind Power has carried out several research projects and has registered several patents. These include integrated lightning protection and de-icing, as well as using microwaves for de-icing.
Our customers have not yet shown much interest in these systems. However, as the use of wind energy solutions is increasing rapidly, we have decided to continue focusing on this problem. We will then be able to develop systems for de-icing the surface of the blades when and if required.
Blades from LM Wind Power are designed with a highly advanced structure that’s based on a simple yet effective concept – two glass fibre shells stiffened with two webs.

All our blade types undergo both
static and dynamic testing. We can
test blades up to 80 metres long
in our own test rig.
