Over thirty years ago, the company pioneered the use of glass fiber to manufacture wind turbine blades. It marked the early moments in what has become a wind revolution, responding to worldwide demand for reliable sustainable, clean energy supplies – a market which is continuing to demonstrate rapid growth.
The company was renamed from Lunderskov Moebelfabrik (Lunderskov Furniture factory) to LM Glasfiber in the 1950s, beginning a heritage unequalled in the industry, which is based on an intrinsic knowledge of these advanced materials and a hard-earned understanding of how to create rotation from the wind. Proof of this statement is that it has survived over the decades when all other blade manufacturers have faltered.
With the arrival in 2001 of backing from one of Europe’s most successful private equity firms, Doughty Hanson, the company has expanded further to become LM Wind Power Blades, named now after the business in which it operates, rather than the material it uses in manufacturing. It marks a new strategic moment, a response to globalization and to increased expectations from an expanding customer base.
In August 2009, Svendborg Brakes was acquired creating a world-leading wind energy components business with a stronger market share and more diversified exposure to the global wind power industry.
Svendborg Brakes is a company at the leading edge of the brake technology field and it will continue to offer its customers solutions for all braking requirements under its current name and branding. Although braking remains a mechanical science, hydraulics and electronics play major roles and will only increase in importance. It is within the latter field that it is expected further growth will come, as the role of advanced hydraulic systems becomes more and more important.

The combined businesses have already strengthened the financial position of the group enabling the company to better support its global client base. In addition to acquisitions, LM Wind Power Group is still driving forward with ambitious organic growth plans and the organization continues to thrive.
History provides clear evidence of the reasons that account for today’s success. LM Wind Power Group retains at its heart the early spirit of constant experimentation, the same hunger for innovation, the quest for quality throughout its operations and desire to deliver what customers need.
For example, the company is capitalizing on its deep technical knowledge to create an additional revenue stream from servicing all blades in operation around the world, by providing a range of additional equipment to enhance performance and by developing comprehensive logistics support – the transportation of blades to where they will be installed and operate. This is why we have established LM Wind Power Service & Logistics.
We have common goals: to create the most efficient components and services to help our customers create wind energy profitably and to ensure operational reliability.
